Many of the world's greatest and most impactful successes in infrastructure development were not based on the latest or newest technologies but on applying fresh perspectives to traditional approaches. As our climate reality becomes increasingly complex and challenging with time, we need to explore new angles to evolve alongside our ever-changing world.
Themed ‘Sustainable Infrastructure: Transforming Asia’s Journey’, AIF 2024 centred on the urgent need to transform our approach to accelerate Asia's green transition and sustainable infrastructure development. Fresh strategies are required to address a complex interplay of environmental, economic and social factors. They are crucial for harnessing infrastructure opportunities and leverage them as catalysts to enable a sustainable Asia today.

Nearing the end of the first quarter of the 21st Century, global carbon emissions are peaking, yet the pace or gravity of change to achieve the commitments that countries have made both domestically and internationally are still lacking. Infrastructure is widely recognised as a critical enabler of this transition, not just towards environmental sustainability, but to also bring about economic and social outcomes.
The panel discussion will frame the issues and challenges around infrastructure and the lack of transition to date. Importantly, it will highlight opportunities to rectify shortfalls and bring positive outcomes through collaborative efforts across Asia. Regional leaders and policy makers will share how fostering a shared ambition to deliver economic opportunities and resilience will be important for future global transformation and prominence of Asia through (a) fixing challenges in the supply chain, (b) focusing on strategic connectivity, and (c) using infrastructure to multiply value through regional collaboration.

Transitioning from the 'What' to the 'How,' the session will delve into the complexities of the delivery challenge while emphasising the potential benefits through opportunities. The panel will present diverse perspectives on the critical elements of the infrastructure ecosystem. These elements are crucial for realising the shared ambition, economic outcomes, and resilience as outlined in the previous session.

Over the next decade, infrastructure financing is expected to undergo transformative shifts with the development of new financing tools. The intersection of digitalization and technology will be crucial in sustainable finance and infrastructure development. How can we enable sustainable investments and what are some of the challenges of infrastructure digitalisation? The financing panel will explore financing trends and innovations, including the role of digitalization in achieving net zero; and highlight the pivotal role that financial institutions play in shaping a low-carbon economy, such as through the provision of green frameworks and transition financing.

As the fastest growing region in the world, Asia is home to more than 2000 coal-fired power plants in 2023 (per Global Energy Monitor) yet the pace and readiness for renewables adoption is distinctly varied across the region. Therefore, the scale of Asia’s energy transition presents opportunities and challenges at multiple levels – political, social, and economic.
In this featured session, we explore with policy makers, regulators, developers, and financiers through a C-Suite panel and deep dive sessions into two key and co-dependent themes in Asia’s Energy Transition journey:
1. Coal Managed Phaseout – opportunities and challenges, both at the project and country-level;
2. Integration of renewable generation, battery storage systems, and alternative low-carbon solutions such as ammonia and hydrogen to replace coal.
These sessions include how changemakers are targeting not just one part of the transition, but considering the whole energy ecosystem and grid resilience and integration beyond borders.
